A relatively new class of wine usually labeled as vino da tavola. Super-Tuscans came about because of strict classification laws in Italy for Chianti which does not allow large additions of such varieties as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah.
Super-Tuscans are usually a blend of Sangiovese with a French varietal such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah. These wines are usually matured in oak barrels and have great complexity and longevity.
