Probably originated in the Médoc region of France but is rarely found there today. A low yielding grape variety that produces deep colored, full-bodied wines. Carmenère has been mistaken for Merlot in Chile and Cabernet Franc in northern Italy. It ripens between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and shares traits of both of these varieties.
