Originally from the province of Aragon in Spain, Carignane is heavily planted in Italy and Southern France. A black grape that is high in acidity, color, bitterness, and tannins. Carignage is used mainly for production of inexpensive red wines. This variety will produce copious amounts of fruit if not tended properly. Vines grown on low-yielding, poor soils can produce fruit that makes very good wine. Late budding and late ripening, this variety needs significant heat for proper ripening. Carbonic maceration can improve wine profile for early consumption.
