Sylvaner/Silvaner

Silvaner most likely originated in Austria and then moved into Germany in the 1600’s. Today this variety is primarily grown in Germany and central Europe as well as in Alsace, France.
Silvaner is not known for having a lot of character but is known for fairly high acidity and good productivity. Silvaner ripens earlier than Riesling but lacks the character that Riesling has. Wine from this variety is often used for blending where the high acid levels are particularly prized.
