Pinotage

Pinotage

Overall Impression:

A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut that was developed in South Africa. Pinotage has become a popular varietal but has not always been well received. Managing yields, fermentation temperatures, and using French and American oak has led to production of easy to drink wine with good depth and tannins with a fruity nose. This variety can easily have overpowering sweet, fruity character dominated by isoamyl acetate. Low yields and reduced fermentation temperatures help to tame the wild aromatics.
